Final Music

Firstly, we chose singer/songwriter Jack Rosies' song in order to conform to the music usually used in social realism films. However, this song did not fit with our narrative as the lyrics did not link and the were distracting from our film. We then involved a cover of 'People help the People', believing that is was copyright free, however, we later realised it wasn't and changed it to "Lost" by A Hamitsu. We also thought that is fitted with the upbeat rhythm of our trailer and the action involved. 

For the beginning of our trailer we needed to create some party music, we decided to do this on garageband ourselves. Here's how:

Final Storyboard

Film Title

After using the title 'Viral', we decided it was too obvious and as a team we did not like it so looked for a new film Title. We came up with the title 'Tipping Point', as we like the way it involves the emotional decline of the protagonist. This then lead us towards the YouTube layout where the second part 'Tube' is written in a red box, after noticing we also have a two word title.

When creating our Title font for the trailer, we wanted to incorporate the theme of social media and the dangers of the internet, so trying to imitate the YouTube logo looked really effective.  It was difficult for us to get the same font as the YouTube font as it cost £39.99 to download, however, we managed to find a font that was very similar, and used that instead. For good brand cohesion and style, we used these throughout our credits too, on our poster, website and my blog.

Red Motif

Throughout our trailer we have a red motif running through. This is used to show the increasing danger and horror that is entering the life of the protagonist. We included this, as even though our film is Social Realism, the scenario that she is facing could be seen as a modern horror, without any jumps or slasher features. The video below shows the parts of this trailer that include this red motif.

Audience Expectations from Genre

To understand if we were heading in the right direction we asked our audience the simple question what do you expect to see in a social realism film, here are a few of the responses:

"I'd expect to be able to relate really well to it and for it to feel real to me, so not like fake and overly edited I guess"

"Probably looking at the working class people? quite a lot of like drugs and stuff"

"I'd expect it to be revolved around contemporary lifestyles so people taking drugs and getting drunk and showing how things are romanticized when they're actually bad"

"based on real life and issues. For example drugs, crime, religious tension, poverty and any other issues in todays society"

We realise that these are the audiences typical expectations of genre, we could argue that our storyline contains elements of these; however we have begun to challenge the genre expectations by incorporating the very modern and very topical theme of social media. We feel that this is now an aspect of social realism as it is a part of everyone in this society's daily life.

"The Boy Next Door" - Frame Analysis

I have analysed the trailer of 'The Boy Next Door' as it is a social realism film which has similar ideas to those we may explore. From this I have gained a lot of inspiration on which shots I can use to display certain characters a themes in different ways.

Audience Feedback

After showing our first draft, we received some audience feedback including things people liked, disliked and their overall impressions of the trailer. 75% of our responses said that they were impressed by our opening, with the remaining 25% finding it average. Our genre is clear as everyone knew the trailer was Social Realism, and the responses that we intended for where given, with emotional responses like "really intrigued and sad" and "i'm holding back tears".

Due to the constructive criticism received from our first viewing we have decided to take out the itching shots as we believe it isn't needed to show the protagonist's decline. To link the beginning to the rest of the trailer we have inserted a black screen with message alerts playing as this emphasises our theme of the dangers of technology. Our font was not ready for the first viewing but has now been changed also. 

We also discovered that our music in the second half of the trailer was copyright free, so had to find another peice of music for the second half of the trailer. We actually preferred this music, and found it very effective as it was slightly contrapuntal.

Fake Drugs

In order to shoot some of our scenes we need to create fake drugs that look authentic, this is so we can create the conventional social realism shot of our protagonist swallowing pills and washing them down with alcohol (a spirit of some kind). I have researched a variety of ways to make different prop drugs which we can practise to test their effectiveness. 

Pharmaceutical drugs (such as paracetamol)

In order to create the double ended tablet, I thought that dipping tic tacs in red food colouring could work, I will need to test this as the colour may not be intense enough and it may face or drip off. This will however look quite authentic as it is an iconic tablet design.

Cocaine

When reading to the link below it said “It’s usually cornstarch, but you have to put a bit of baby powder into it, because starch is too sticky and heavy,” in order to keep our actor comfortable we would probably not have her nose in shot and instead just see a straw sucking up the powder, this means we do not need to worry about how the substance actually affects our actor however we will still have to make sure it looks authentic, if we decide to get the nose in shot snorting the powder we would need to change it to lactose powder as it has no effect and is just a milk product.

Tabs of acid

We thought a shot of an acid tab disintegrating on the protagonists tongue could be an effective shot however to get this we would need to create the fake tabs. For this we could find edible paper and use a perforator to create separate squares, these could then be placed on the actors tongue and would give the authentic look of the tab dissolving.

Marijuana

There are many ways of sourcing prop marijuana, one of them being buying the actual substance from websites such as legalbuds.com without the active ingredient THC however using the herb oregano is equally as authentic looking and therefore if we decide to use a shot of the protagonist smoking marijuana we will use this method.
